Big Data, Fin Tech, Password security, AI Do you find something in common in these things?
It is mathematics
Mathematics is near us in everyday life
Let’s take a look at what industrial mathematics is and what the NIMS does to solve industrial problems
Have you heard about industrial mathematics?
“In fact, this is the first time.” “No, this is the first time I’m hearing about it.“ Industrial Mathematics?
Soon-yeong Chung (President of NIMS): the process of communicating between mathematical sciences and industry or mathematics consumers is communication based on mathematical methods. We define this activity as industrial mathematics.
Key Activities in Solving Industrial Mathematical Problems
Industrial Mathematical Problem-Solving Workshop
Young-ho Woo (NIMS): We are carrying out a problem-solving process called the Mathematical Problem Solving Workshop. It is called a study group overseas.
Min-jung Gim (NIMS): About 100 mathematicians come together to concentrate and solve industrial problems in a short period of time.
Seong-woon Kim (NIMS): People from various places positions, and ranks, from professors to university students, corporate officials, and graduate students have come together.
Since everyone has a different background, we have different knowledge areas and we see a great diversity in the approaches we use when we look at the problem.
Young-jin Kim (NIMS): What we need most is the chance to talk to other in the field often and in depth.
Prof, Se-won Lee (Pukyong National Uni.) While seeing the problems that people in the field are up against and discussing them with experts from various fields, I see problems from various viewpoints that I had not had the experience of before, It has been a great opportunity to learn many things.
Min-Woo Hwang (GH G&C): The problem I submitted was how to extract a comparison group according to the characteristics of the building.
It could be a problem related with business feasibility or the methodology, I felt some possibility to solve the problem and it helped me a great deal.
Industrial Mathematics Academy
Joon Heo (NIMS): One of the most difficult things that I feel when I meet future generations is that they want to experience industrial mathematics but have no opportunity.
This program was designed to provide various students and corporate officials with the opportunity to learn about programming tools or analytical methods with a wide range of applications while solving the problems that companies face and through the experience of solving actual industrial mathematical problems.
Prof. Ho-Soo Lee (Sungkyunkwan Univ.): How we understand things mathematically and developing mathematical concepts are important.
Prof. Jae-Hwa Lee (Sungkyunkwan Univ.): When the modeling works well, we will already have the methods to solve the problem. As long as we can model the industrial problems that are given to students, we can deal with the rest with tools that we already have.
I hope the students don’t worry too much and learn the basic things that they can learn here.
Hye-min Ku (Ehwa Womens Univ.): I personally realized that industrial mathematics is a hot topic.
Ha-ryeon Shin (Kyunghee Univ.): I think I have learned many things here.
Hyo-jin Jung (Seoul National Univ.): I think I can say I am making something that can help you with mathematics.
Woo-taek Oh (DEVSISTERS): It was nice to learn how the data analysis methods I know are applied in other areas.
Be-oh Park (Kyunghee Univ.): I will look harder to see if there are more of these types of opportunities around.
The NIMS will not only work on theorietical studies but also maximize the impact of mathematics in industry.
